A light morning mist hung over the region on Saturday, but it quickly burned off to reveal partly cloudy skies — ideal conditions for the Jaguar Association of Greater St. Louis (JAGSL) spring drive to Grafton.
Members gathered at the St. Louis Bread Company in Westport for coffee, quick bites, and conversation before heading out in a spirited convoy toward the Alton Locks. The drive up along the Great River Road offered beautiful views of the Mississippi River and the rising limestone bluffs that define this stretch of Illinois countryside.
Upon arrival at the Alton Locks and Dam, the group was warmly welcomed by their guide for a private tour of the Melvin Price Locks and Dam. The guide provided an engaging overview of the facility’s operations, history, and importance to commercial navigation on the Mississippi. One of the highlights was taking the elevator up and down to the various levels, giving participants a close-up perspective of these massive engineering structures that control water levels and allow barges to safely pass.
After the informative and impressive lock tour, the Jaguars continued upriver to the historic river town of Grafton. The destination was The Loading Dock, a popular casual restaurant right on the waterfront. Members enjoyed a relaxed lunch with river views, surrounded by the lively atmosphere of weekend flea market shoppers and visitors strolling the streets of Grafton.
The combination of an interesting technical tour, scenic driving, good company, and a satisfying meal made for a perfect JAGSL outing. Events like these highlight why the club continues to thrive — blending our shared passion for Jaguars with memorable experiences in the beautiful countryside surrounding St. Louis.
A big thank you to everyone who joined, to our knowledgeable guide at the Melvin Price Locks, and to The Loading Dock for taking good care of our group. Here’s to more great drives ahead!
